The International Ocean Institute, Southern Africa (IOI-SA) seeks a Programmer for a 4-month contract. The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  • Work with the Biodiversity Informatics Program Manager to finalize the scoping details of the project
  • Design the database tables which contain project specific information
  • Modify the content management framework and its database to display and search the information contained in these project specific tables
  • Once complete assist to load the information into these tables
  • Assist with the co-ordination of the loading of textual information into the modified content management framework
  • Co-ordinate the testing of the new systems together with the client
  • Work with the client to adjust the system according to the testing results    

Requirements for this position:

Extensive Programming experience in:

- PHP

- MySQL databases

- Microsoft SQL Server


Additional skills – experience in modifying content management frameworks, specifically Drupal to include pages which contain information drawn from other database tables specific to this project.

This is a 4-month contract. About the Project  

The International Ocean Institute – Southern Africa initiated the project of updating, renovation and upgrading of the State of the Environment Information System (SEIS) for the Benguela Current Commission (BCC). The updated and upgraded SEIS system is being designed to serve the needs of the BCLME region with respect to the information needs of the management, scientific and public sectors. The system will make available vetted summary data related to the key ocean and coastal environmental indicators.
